    Rain Made QME A Challenge

The rain at Queensland Mining Expo (QME) 2008 posed a difficulty for the Rockhampton Region exhibitors who travelled to Mackay according to Rockhampton Regional Development Acting Chief Executive Rick Palmer.

“The rain became a bit more than a drizzle during the afternoon on the first day (Tuesday 22 July),” he said.  “The following day there was constant rain and this made it difficult for visitors to make it into the outside exhibits.  The sun came out after lunch on the final day as most exhibitors were packing up.”

“While the rain may have been unseasonal, it made it tough for our group as we had half an outdoor site.

QME was a success from a Rockhampton Regional Development perspective, Rick said.  In addition to our regional presence, we made contact with three resource focussed businesses which are looking at establishing a base around Rockhampton.

“I also saw an excellent multi-exhibitor site which we can use to develop our site at future expos.  I also attended the Mining 2020 conference at Laguna Whitsunday and was exposed to some interesting ideas about mining growth and the coal supply chain.

Other businesses which took part in the Rockhampton Region display were:

    ·         Longwall Visual Analysis

    ·         Best Doors

    ·         Dot Fechner First National Real Estate

    ·         Rockhampton Tourist & Business Information

    ·         Rockhampton Airport

    ·         Enterprise Connect

    ·         Endeavour Foundation

    ·         Capricornia Training Company

    Word From The Chief Executive

I was part of the group from the Rockhampton Region at the Queensland Mining Expo (QME) in Mackay for three days last week. Once more I left with the vivid impression of a successful exposition. There was a record number of exhibitors and, in spite of the rain, a small increase in the number of recorded visitors over the 2006 figure.

Reed Exhibitions started selling sites for the Queensland Resources Expo (QREX) 2009 at QME and they were pleased with the strength of the response they received. Many of their sales staff temporarily shifted to customer service roles during the rain and consequently they ended QME with fewer concluded contracts than they planned. They are now faced with the task of converting interest into contracts.

I had a talk with David Wallis, MESCA’s executive officer, and he told me MESCA, which had a group of 20 exhibitors at QME, was happy to arrange for a group of their members to attend QREX 2009. I was pleased to hear that, as MESCA weren’t prepared to be involved with QREX 2007 as it was partly held on the weekend.

In the near future Reed Exhibitions will also speak with Michael Widt from Blackwoods, who organised an important group exhibit at last year’s expo.

All in all, we have been more than pleased with the initial sale of sites in the QREX trade fair. We have likewise been pleased with some of the feedback we’ve been receiving about the 2009 Educate & Inspire Centre. It augers well for QREX to build on the foundations which were laid in 2007.

As part of my trip to Mackay, I visited the Mining 2020 conference at Laguna Whitsundays. I was exposed to some new ideas about the gas to liquids technology and about the Goonyella coal chain. In addition, I made some good contacts with the Mackay Area Industry Network which can result in some regional advocacy for QREX and QME.

    Regards,

    Rick Palmer

    Warehouse Management Training Workshop

L&SC Strategies are holding a two-day Warehouse Management Training Workshop in Rockhampton on 19-20 August at the Department of Primary Industries. Their “Early Bird” special offer of $875 pp has been extended.

This workshop will help participants to understand how to significantly optimise warehouse throughput by increasing accuracy and efficiency; plus strategies to increase fill rates, improve processes and identify suitable warehouse layout and equipment options. To find out more about L&SC Strategies workshops, visit their website.

As well as workshops L&SC Strategies also offer a Supply Chain Risk Audit to assist clients to rapidly identify areas in their company and across extended supply chains that may expose their company to risk and prevent the achievement of strategic performance goals.

Supply chain risk is a mismatch between supply and demand (intra-business and inter-business). Rockhampton Regional Development Limited Members are offered a complimentary risk analysis using the preview version of the Supply Chain Risk Audit© tool.

Only 20 minutes of your time is required to complete the tool. Analysis and results are presented in a follow up meeting. Don’t risk it any longer! Arrange an appointment today by contacting Sharyn Grant on 07 4927 5433.

    Herron Todd White July Review

The latest Herron Todd White review focused on how developers roll with the market to remain successful. With the residential market slowing over the past 6 – 8 months, the rate of sales for new allotments has slowed as well.

To date, price reductions and rebates on costs have not attracted buyers. Developers themselves are less optimistic as there have been no new development approvals in the area since early 2008.

Industrial land, however, has continued to strengthen with increased land values. Allotments in the Parkhurst area are realising $105/m2, with a property currently under contract for $1.8m, over double the purchasing price from two years ago.

There is also speculation about a new industrial subdivision in Rockhampton, as well as a recent sale of a 2.7Ha site for $4.2m.

The full report can be found on the Herron Todd White website.
