From the Desk of the Chief Executive

As you’ll be aware, the extraordinary general meeting of Rockhampton Regional Development held on 25 March unanimously approved the proposal for RRD to merge with Capricorn Tourism to form a new body to represent economic development and tourism in the Rockhampton region.

The next step in the process is for the Rockhampton Regional Council to consider the question of funding for the new organisation.

This will also involve Council thinking through the extent to which it wishes to handle economic and tourism issues internally, and the extent to which it wishes to have them handled by an external organisation.

Once the funding question has been answered, the final step will be the consideration of the amalgamation proposal by the members of Capricorn Tourism and Development Inc.

Hopefully, that meeting can take place by mid-May.

If these steps are able to fall into line, the new combined organisation should be able to start operations on 1 July 2010.

Regionalisation Plan For Rockhampton

A regionalisation plan for the Fitzroy Region is being developed to encourage newcomers to the area and to manage future growth.

During the Queensland Growth Management Summit last week, Premier Anna Bligh announced the future plans for the region.

Creating affordable housing would be one of the key components of the regionalisation plan.

The Fitzroy Region is well placed to grow with over $1.19 billion being spent on building and infrastructure projects this financial year, including upgrades to the Capricorn Highway ($16.3m), Rockhampton Hospital expansion ($149m) and the redevelopment of the CQ Institute of TAFE Rockhampton campus ($9.7m).

Industry Action Plans for the area’s key sectors – manufacturing, engineering and industrial services – have also been developed to help drive growth and prosperity in the region.

The study will provide input into the preparation of the new planning scheme for Rockhampton.
